Vincent Herring
"The first time I heard about Alexander reeds, I assumed that they were just like
all the rest...1 or 2 good ones in a box and if you were really lucky once in a
while, you would come across a great sounding reed. Every time I would see
Seamus Blake, we would talk shop and he kept telling me “The Alexander reeds
are incredible!"
Finally decided to try one. The first one out of the box was the best sounding
reed I had played in the past few years. I thought to myself, that must be the
one special reed in the box. I played that first reed for about 2 weeks. I thought
"Why not try my luck again?", and I have not played another brand of reed
since. Alexander Reeds have 7 to 8 great reeds in a box.
Having a great sounding reed makes me practice longer and makes life more
pleasurable. I have to say “The Alexander "DC" Alto saxophone reeds are the
best sounding reeds I have ever played, and by far the most consistent."
When you think of the top Alto sax players on the scene today, the name
Vincent Herring inevitably comes up. Starting with his touring in Lionel
Hampton's big band, Vincent's great playing was soon recognized by the jazz
world as he did a steady progression of gigs with some of its leading members
or bands such as Nat Adderely, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, the
Horace Silver Quintet, Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition, Larry Coryell, Cedar
Walton, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, The Mingus Big Band, Roy Hargrove,
Phil Wood's Sax Machine, and many more. In addition to this , he appeared as
a special guest soloist with Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center and Jon Faddis
and The Carnegie Hall Big Band.
And his music contributions go beyond this as he has been a leader in his own
right, participating in almost every major jazz festival in the world as well as
recording 14 CDs under his name and over 200 as a sideman. He has capped
off this magnificent career by sharing his great knowledge of jazz and the
saxophone at clinics given with students from both the US and Europe.
There is no question that Vincent Herring is among the strongest voices on the
Alto saxophone. If you haven't had the opportunity to hear this alto player's alto
player, we recommend that you do. He is quite busy covering the globe and we
hope you get a chance to hear one of his performances.
